Relic Brewing Company in Plainville is no stranger to our unwavering praise. Having been profiled with a brewery tasting guide back in April, their Double IPA Feral King was a former Beer of the Week, and now Black Dawn, an American Stout earned itself another entry into our catalogue of Connecticut beer.
Relic’s size certainly doesn’t limit its production. Having a relatively small taproom that offers free samples, growler fills, and bottles to-go, Relic still pushes an assortment of beer to the masses. From their staple IPA Tropicale to Demiana, a Dark Saison, chances are you’ll find a Relic offering at your local liquor store. One often thinks what kind of damage they would do with a traditional taproom that offers pints and flights for sale, but only time will tell if we’ll ever get to experience such a treat.
Black Dawn pours an opaque dark chocolate brown with a frothy head of foam, deep roasted malt and coffee make up the aroma characteristics. The flavors behind Black Dawn are those of standard Stout’s but amplified to a point where you think you’re drinking an Imperial.
Dark fruits, milk chocolate, roasted barley, and coffee intermingle on the palate creating the familiar Stout characteristics, but the mouthfeel is what sets this one apart from its competitors. Aggressively rich, paired with low carbonation and a sharp bitterness on the finish round this beer out.
Unlike some beers we feature, finding Black Dawn shouldn’t be an issue. Whether at your neighborhood liquor store or at one of the twelve bars where it’s currently on tap, there’s no excuse to miss this great seasonal beer.
Relic’s taproom is open Thursday & Friday from 4-7pm, and Saturday from 12-4pm (seasonal hours may vary).
